1 Kings 3:5–10 “The prayer of Solomon”
“In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what shall I give thee. And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before Thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with Thee; and Thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that Thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. And now, O LORD my God, Thou hast made Thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
And Thy servant is in the midst of Thy people which Thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore Thy servant an understanding heart to judge Thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this Thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing” (emphasis mine).
I would like very much to share with you some thoughts from the Bible regarding Solomon’s prayer. Although he was a king, we find him humble before God. He said, “Lord, I am a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in.” How good it will be when we also come before the Lord asking the same thing; and we can imagine how willing our heavenly Father is to give us those things. An understanding heart should be our request. How beautiful these words are to Jesus. David said in his Psalm, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD: and the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance.” Psalm 33:12. In verses 4–5 he said, “For the word of the LORD is right; and all His works are done in truth. He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.”
May our Father in heaven show us His will and act according to it. This is my wish and prayer for you and for me.
“Let all the earth fear the Lord.” Psalm 33:8
